Central to our business
Technology Services is central to everything we do at RBS. Without it, we quite simply couldn’t function. And in a competitive global industry like finance, technology increasingly helps to set us apart. Our customers and employees expect a fast and reliable service which enables them to access assets and information at any time, and from anywhere in the world. In Technology Services, we develop, deliver and maintain that service. In fact, we’re responsible for processing some 35% of all financial transactions made in the UK; our Group payment systems process in excess of £120bn a day; and we operate the third largest ATM system in Europe – the 12th largest in the world.
Get a rounded view
We have an exceptional record of designing and delivering large-scale integration and award-winning solutions on a global stage. And as graduate with us, you’ll get to explore the full spectrum of what we do. Our two year programme offers you the chance to rotate through key areas of our business, from strategy to development. It means you’ll be able to experience everything a career in technology has to offer whilst getting a real flavour of life in a global business. The programme sits within Technology Services, a key part of our Business Services division, which is a delivery-focused business working on an international platform.
A mix of departments
Technology Services is a function with clear priorities. Our specialist teams deal with application and infrastructure builds, testing and deployment as well as supporting global technology services for the Group. Your programme will have three different placements designed to give you a broad view of our different functions.
Drive your own development
Ours is a huge organisation and although you’ll undertake an initial training programme, you certainly won’t be spoon-fed assignments. We’ll expect you to take control of your own path so you’ll need to let your manager know when you’re looking for tasks that will stretch your skills or enable you to develop new ones. They’ll do their best to support you and, as long as you have the drive and determination, the sky really will be the limit in terms of your ongoing progression.
In at the deep end
You’re likely to be given a lot of responsibility very early on and you could even find yourself in a team that’s already mid-way through a project. It means you’ll be expected to learn quickly and contribute from the outset. The projects themselves will vary greatly – you might be overseeing work on an application that will enable the centralisation of information or you could find yourself implementing one of our high profile, government linked, industry leading projects like Faster Payment systems. And any number of other things besides. Our work really does touch on all aspects of the bank, so variety is guaranteed.
A performance culture
We’re very delivery-focused and you’ll need to be just as committed to achieving results as we are, right from your very first day. We’ll support your development with training in areas like communication, influencing and change management, but your development will ultimately be down to you. We’ll give you the platform to perform, you just need to apply yourself and seize the opportunities as they come – and there will be many.
The qualities you’ll need to bring
We’ll be looking for a 2:1 degree and 280 UCAS points in addition to some commercial work experience. Skills gained in an industrial placement programme or technology-based environment is preferred, but work experience gained in any setting should help you gain the skills we are looking for. You should be resilient, open to change and collaborative in your approach – especially because you’ll need to establish, nurture and maintain strong relationships with people at all levels.
