What we do
The Global Restructuring Group (GRG) plays a key role in maintaining the health of the bank’s lending portfolio. We do this by working with corporate clients who are facing debt challenges. Our focus is to create a turn-around strategy wherever possible, using innovative and bespoke solutions. By approaching potential and problem debt in a proactive manner, we enable those customers to return to their relationship with the mainstream bank. We also help to minimise lending losses and protect the bank’s revenue streams.

How we’re structured
GRG is unique in the marketplace because it combines both Relationship and Credit functions. We believe this organisational set-up helps us to make better, more effective decisions in our day-to-day operations.

The function itself made up of a number of different teams. The Business Restructuring Group (BRG) works exclusively with RBS Group customers. These customers include everyone from owner-managed businesses with debt over £1 m to complex limited companies with debt up to £20 m. The Corporate Restructuring Unit (CRU), by contrast, works with both RBS and multi-bank customers. Their client group will typically have debt in excess of £20 m. The Strategic Investment Group (SIG) provides advice and support on pricing positions which fall outside the Bank’s normal risk profile. This may include balance sheet restructuring and the pricing/negotiating of equity or other instruments.

GRG is a global operation with around 700 staff and offices in the UK, US, Europe and The Far East.

A unique challenge
Graduates joining us will need to be both relationship managers and technical experts. It’ll be down to you to build relationships with your customers to help them to turn their businesses around. That’s a huge challenge by any measure – one calling for tact, diplomacy and first-rate communication skills. You’ll also need to be resourceful and pragmatic in your approach to problem-solving.

It won't all be about soft skills, however. You’ll also need to have a good technical understanding of how a variety of businesses operate and how to analyse financial and market data. You’ll also need to know which solution is appropriate for which client in which situation: a challenge that requires both good judgment and excellent analytical skills.

What you can expect
As a graduate on the programme, you will initially be involved in researching and analysing information for new cases. You will also participate in case reviews, attend customer meetings and become conversant with the operation of both GRG and Risk functions within RBS.

Over time, we will devolve more and more responsibilities to you. As your relationship management skills and technical understanding develop, you will gradually take responsibility for a portfolio of customers.  You will then start to contribute to the strategy and direction of those cases – and take appropriate measures to mitigate risks for both the businesses and the bank.

What we’ll be looking for
Given that you’ll be engaging with businesses at a difficult time, a professional and mature approach is absolutely essential. Confident and highly articulate, you are someone who knows how to build relationships and gain the trust of people at every level, yet have the conviction to take a firm stance when necessary. As well as great communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll also need to have first-rate numeracy and analytical skills. This role will require you to work with numbers and make sense of often complex data on a daily basis. It’s vital that you have the skills to rise to this challenge.
