What did you know about RBS prior to working for them?

I joined RBS in 2006. For me – even back then - they were more than just a respected high street bank. They were an ambitious and dynamic organisation.

What attracted you to working for RBS?

RBS was a bank that was going places. There were other factors, too. The fact that I could work in Edinburgh was a major plus. Also, the rotational nature of the Finance scheme would allow me to experience a number of different areas within the bank.

Is there anything that surprised you after joining?

I certainly never realised the sheer scale or global reach of RBS’ operations. The emphasis and importance they placed on the graduate scheme was also very refreshing.  There was real support and encouragement for us from day one.

What made you decide to go into your particular business area?

I chose the Finance scheme because it would allow me to experience a wide variety of business areas. Like many, I didn’t have a clear career path laid out in my head. This seemed the perfect way to discover what business area was for me.

What training and development opportunities have you received?

The training has been incredibly thorough. From courses in Excel to workshops on negotiation, the programme has given me the full suite of skills.

How would you describe the culture/working environment?

I’ve been lucky enough to work in some really great teams. The cultural environment here is very supportive. They’re also highly receptive to new ideas and perspectives.

What makes RBS unique?

The challenges we face right now make us pretty unique. This promises to be a career-defining moment for everyone who joins us.

What do you enjoy most about your role and working at RBS?

The variety of the Finance programme has always been the best part for me.

Is there anything that you’ve found particularly challenging or difficult in your role?

Challenges vary from role to role. I think towards the biggest challenge, however, comes from gaining greater responsibility. There’s less of a safety net when you’re in a senior-level position.

How do you see your future with RBS?

I am very close to completing the graduate scheme and am presently weighing up my options.  The great thing about working for such a large institution is that you get so many choices here.

Is there any advice you would give to future grads thinking of joining RBS?

The RBS graduate scheme has treated me extremely well.  Although the perception of the bank has changed over the last year, the underlying fundamentals that made it a good company and a good employer are still there.  I truly believe that the bank boasts one of the best graduate programmes around and despite recent events, their investment in graduates is as impressive as ever.

What tips would you have for people joining now?

Think about what you want to get out of your time – whether that’s a specific career path or a certain professional qualification.  Make the best use of your contacts and networks here; they will help you reach your destination a lot quicker.

What happened on your best ever day at RBS?

As part of our recent graduate conference, we had an evening event that was a Hollywood-themed murder mystery.  It was just a great excuse to dress up, have fun, and catch up with friends from the other graduate programmes.
